It doesn't have to be the big trips
Perhaps you're a leader or member of a learning disability service and you feel like you aren't going on enough day trips?
I hear you.
I understand how stressful it can be to plan trips out when someone with a learning disability is involved.
Other than thinking about funding and costs, or even how safe we can make it for them, we also spend a lot of time worrying about how we can make it a much more fulfilling experience.
And so maybe this is why we always feel the need for it to be extravagant and grand....
Feeling like it always needs to be (or even that it only counts when its) a "big trip to the beach" or a "fun-filled day at the park".
And although those are valid concerns and important trips to have at one point or another, it's important not to forget that small trips can actually be just as fulfilling and empowering.
So today, I'd like to give a little reminder for all you intellectual disability care service providers, carers (or even fellow parents!):
It DOES NOT always have to be those big trips out.
It doesn't have to cost you so much
take too long, or:
take so much of your time or energy or effort...
Ordinary trips such as ones to the shops, to buy some bread or milk
to get some flowers, etc. can be just as fulfilling and empowering.
After all, these are all things we do, so they should be able to do them and experience them just as well... don't you think?
Knowing that they are doing what we are doing can be so encouraging for them.
It will fulfill and empower them and their needs to belong, to feel part of the community, and that they can do what we can do too.
I'd love to know what you will be doing on your next trip out?
